Is PETG Ok For Outdoor Use?

Advantages
1. Good weather resistance: PETG has a certain resistance to ultraviolet rays and can withstand sunlight for a certain period of time without deformation or obvious discoloration. Compared with PLA and ABS, it has better anti-ultraviolet performance. It also has excellent hydrolysis resistance at room temperature, low water absorption, and can maintain good stability in humid outdoor environments.
2. Excellent mechanical properties: It has high strength and flexibility. Its high impact strength enables it to withstand sudden external force impact without breaking easily. Its high tensile strength increases its flexibility. It usually does not suddenly break or break when overloaded, but bends. It can be used to manufacture outdoor products that need to withstand certain external forces, such as bicycle fenders, frisbees, etc.
3. Good thermal stability: PETG has a glass transition temperature of about 85°C and a heat deformation temperature of about 70°C. It can maintain good performance within a certain temperature range and usually does not deform or cause problems in conventional outdoor temperature environments.
Disadvantages
1. Long-term UV exposure may cause discoloration: Although PETG has a certain UV resistance, it may still show slight discoloration when exposed to outdoor sunlight for a long time, which may affect its appearance and transparency.
2. Performance degradation in high temperature environment: When the temperature approaches or exceeds its glass transition temperature, PETG may lose some mechanical strength and deform, warp and other problems. For example, in the hot summer, PETG products placed outdoors may deform if they are exposed to high temperature for a long time.
3. The surface is easy to scratch: The surface of PETG is relatively soft and can be easily scratched in high-contact outdoor environments, which affects its appearance and performance.
If PETG is to be used for long-term outdoor use, some measures can be taken to improve its durability, such as adding anti-UV additives and surface coating treatment.
